In 2026, Top Gun celebrates 40 years since the aviation drama first soared into theatres in 1986. The film follows Maverick, a gifted fighter pilot, as he confronts fierce rivalries, personal loss and the challenge of proving himself at the elite Top Gun school. Its legacy was reignited with Top Gun: Maverick in 2022, which earned a Best Picture nomination.

Shaped like the iconic Top Gun logo, the coin's coloured reverse displays the logo's bold design. Beneath the logo are the inscriptions '1986*2026' to the left and '40 YEARS' to the right, along with The Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark. The obverse bears the Jody Clark effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, with the coin's weight, fineness, monetary denomination and 2026 year-date, flanked by the wing pattern from the Top Gun logo.
